June 21, 2008 POPULAR Australian tennis player Alun Jones has retired.
The 28-year-old's Wimbledon-eve decision is ironic given he is forever linked to the grasscourt grand slam event, not so much through his on-court antics but as an actor with a small role as fictional tennis player Tom Cavendish in the film "Wimbledon".

Jones's last match on the tour was a loss in the first round of qualifying for Wimbledon earlier this week.

"I think when people retire, they just know it's time," he said.

"For me, I wasn't really enjoying the tour as a whole. I was starting to find it hard to motivate myself and to train hard.

"At times on court, I wasn't competing like I usually did.

"The big thing was the travelling and to commit myself for eight months overseas travelling week in week out and being away from my future wife, family and friends.

"The older you get, the harder it gets, I think.

Jones will marry in Belgium later this month before returning to Canberra where he plans to start up a private coaching business.

After eight years on the circuit, the South African-born Canberran achieved a career-high ranking of 123 earlier this year, secured his first grand slam victory in the opening round of this year's Australian Open and made his Davis Cup debut in February.

Jones also rates his four-set opening round battle with Rafael Nadal on centre court at last year's US Open as a highlight.

"I am extremely happy with what I achieved in tennis," he said.

"I was a late-bloomer and never did well in juniors. I kept at it and by around 20 years old I started playing some decent tennis.

"I never had a lot of help when I was young and in the end I think it made me a better player trying to work things out for myself."
